Born in Kaduna on 17th January 1958, Professor TaiwoAbioye began her tertiary education with a National Certificate in Education (NCE) fromBorno State Advanced Teachers' College, Maiduguri (1979-1982) where she was the best graduating student in the Department of English.She proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, for her B. Ed (Language Arts) - 1987, M.A -1992, and PhD in English - 2004. She joined the services of the Ahmadu Bello University in 1988.
She later joined the Covenant University in 2005, became an Associate Professor in 2010 and a full Professor in 2013.
Prof. Abioye, a fully qualified teacher and seasoned university administrator, has served in different capacities in the institutions where she had worked and is currently working. While she was at the Covenant University, she was: Ag. Head, Department of English & Literary Studies (2008-2012), Member, School of Postgraduate Studies, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration, 2012-2014); Deputy Vice-Chancellor (2014-2016); andChair, Senate Business Committee (Oct 2014-June 2016). She has also chaired several statutory and strategic university committees.
An accomplished academic, she is an External Examiner to universities at the postgraduate level and an Assessor at the professorial cadre. She has supervised postgraduate theses at Postgraduate Diploma, Masters and Ph.D levels, and has conference proceedings and publications in reputable scholarly outlets.She has also authored and co-edited several books. She is a member of academic, professional and research bodies at the national and international levels.
She has been teaching and doing research at the tertiary level since 1988, during which time she has coordinated, organized and participated in conferences, seminars and workshops within and outside Nigeria. Her academic background in interdisciplinary knowledge and its discourses are quite evident in that she has taught courses in stylistics, research methods, contemporary English usage, language and national development, sociolinguistics and applied linguistics.
The specific areas of her research interests and publications are Stylistics, Applied Linguistics, English Literacy (Language in Education), Sociolinguistics; Media Language; Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to Women, Girl-child and children Issues. She was the pioneer Research Cluster Leader of Covenant University Women Development and Human Security Initiatives(CUWD&HSI), with specific focus onSustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 1, 4, 5 & 8 (No Poverty; Quality Education; Gender Equality; and Decent Work and Economic Growth); and The African Union Aspirations 2063 Nos. 4 &6 (a peaceful and secure Africa; an Africa whose development is people-driven, relying on the potential of African people, especially its women and youth, and caring for children).
She is a member of several professional bodies like: International Reading Association (IRA), International Sociological Association (ISA): RC 25: Language and Society Research Committee, of which she is a member and Secretary of the Executive Board (2010-2014); RC 32: Women and Migration Research Committee, Reading Association of Nigeria (RAN); and English Studies Association of Nigeria (ESAN) and Nigerian Pragmatics Association (NPrA). She has served as Facilitator and Ogun State Representative of the Joint British Council/NTI Continuing Professional Development Course (CPD), a Programme for English Language Teachers (ELT) in Nigeria & Africa. She has also coordinated workshops and has served as a Resource person for different workshops, as well as for NTI /MDGs Project Retraining Workshop for Teachers of English.
She became the Secretary of the Research Committee (RC 25): Language and Society, of the International Sociological Association in a highly competitive exercise. (The International Sociological Association is a global interdisciplinary association comprised of about 55 Research Committees (RC) covering recognized disciplines). Her over 30 years in academia have been devoted entirely to both scholarship and pedagogy, university administration, student mentoring and the raising of the international profiles of the institutions at which she has served through her contributions to teaching, research and community development. Her Inaugural Lecture entitled:By Words they were Created: The Synergy between Language, Discourse and the Media in the Construction of Realities was delivered on 17th January 2018.
Prof. Abioye is blessed with children and grandchildren.
