Professor Adeniyi Olatunbosun, SAN
Professor Adeniyi Olatunbosun, SAN is an astute and erudite scholar; a Professor of Law. He began his legal education at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife in 1985, after which he proceeded to the Law school and was called to bar in 1989. He had his post-graduate education (LL.M) at the University of Lagos (1991), M.Phil. (OAU, Ife) 2002 and PhD (OAU, Ife) 2006 respectively.
He began his working career with internship between 1989 and 1990 at Adegboyega Adeleke & Co and Nnamanso Ekanem & Co. He also worked in the Oyo State service at the Ministry of Justice, Ibadan between 1990 and 1994. His academic career began at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in 1994, from there, he rose through the ranks with hardwork and diligence at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife till he became a Reader on the 1st of October 2009. He was pronounced a Professor 31st May, 2013 at the University of Ibadan. He taught courses in Private International Law, Criminal Law, Environmental Law, Land Law, Jurisprudence &Legal Theory, and Public International Law among many others.
He has over 27 years’ experience in teaching, research and community service in the University system. He joined the services of the Obafemi Awolowo University in 1994 and rose through the ranks to the level of a Reader in 2009 and appointed a Professor at the University of Ibadan on 31 May, 2013.
Prof Olatunbosun asides his academic and teaching duties have held positions with responsibilities within and outside of the University. He was an Associate Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan from 2005 till 2008, a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria from 1989 till date among others.
He was the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ibadan with three renewable tenures of six years consecutively spanning from 2014 to 2020. He has to his records as the Dean 26 Law graduates from the Faculty making First Class Honours from the bar exams at the Law School, Abuja, in 2019 asides other giant feats. Consistently, it is on record that UI law graduates has many First Class Honours over the years from 2014 till date at the Bar final examination results of the Nigerian Law School.
He has won many scholarships and awards among which are The Carnegie Trust for the Universities in Africa, March 2010 and the Max-Planek Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law Scholarship. He is a Member of several Professional bodies including the Nigerian Bar Association, European Society of Criminology, American Society of International Law, Visiting Professor International Association of Laws Schools, Airlangga, Indonesia among many others. He is the immediate past President of Nigerian Association of Law Teachers, NALT 2018-2019.
He has authored 3 books and edited 4 books among which are “Essentials of Criminal Justice in Nigeria” (2018), “Death of Penalty Jurisprudence in Nigeria” (2018), papers for several journals both local and international as well as academic papers delivered at several conferences. He has served as External Examiner both home and abroad, an Expert at Interviews from 2016 till date as well as supervising several students and candidates at both the under-graduate and post-graduate levels. He was also, at various times, appointed as Visiting Fellow at numerous universities outside the shores of Nigeria, these international universities include, British Institute of International and Comparative Law, British Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, London; Max-Planck Institute of Foreign and International Criminal Law, Freiburg, Germany, among others.
He has 88 publications in learned national and international journals to his credit, including Inaugural Lecture titled “Tough on Crime but Soft on Justice” delivered in 2014. He has presented 17 papers at international conferences, 19 papers at national conferences, 14 public lecture presentations and has successfully supervised 15 Ph. D candidates.
He has attended about 28 conferences, seminars, workshops both locally and internationally, including the Regional Training on Nationality and Statelessness organised by the United Nations and the Regional Ministerial level meeting/conference for the Validation and Adoption of the Regional Plan of Action to Eradicate Statelessness in West Africa, organised by the UNCR in Banjul, Gambia.
He attended both the 2017 and 2019 African Regional Law Deans’ Forum held respectively at the Cape Coast School of Law, Ghana and the University of Rwanda, Kigali, Rwanda. He also attended the 2015 annual meeting of the International Association of Law Schools in Segovia, Spain; and the 2016 meeting of the association at the University of California, USA. He was a member of experts on the Reform of the Criminal Code Law of Lagos State and a member of the Constitutional Review Committee of Oyo State for the Review of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
At the national level, he had, at various times, served as member of the following committees and bodies:

- National Stakeholders’ Summit and Reform of Criminal Code Cap C.38 Laws of Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and Penal Code Cap 532, Laws of Abuja, 1990
- Accreditation Committee of the Council of Legal Education, Nigeria Law School, Bwari, Abuja
- Accreditation Committee of the National Universities Commission (NUC)
- Board of Studies Committee of Council of Legal Education
On the international scene, Professor Adeniyi Olatunbosun has served as Coach of the Law Faculty, University of Ibadan at both the 2015 and 2016 African Governance Architecture Moot Court Competition held in Tanzania and the African Human Rights Moot Court Competition held in South Africa.
He was consulted in 2017 to draft the Academic Brief and Development of LL.M Curriculum Programme for the University of the Gambia, Banjul, Gambia. He was also a Visiting Professor of Law and the pioneer Law Lecturer in the University.
He participated as an expert at the African Union organised High Level Consultation Meeting with Member States (MS) on the Ratification of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol) and the celebrations of the 15th Anniversary of the Maputo Protocol in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He also participated at the Fourth Annual Conference on Law and Religion Studies organised by the West African Regional Center for Law and Religion Studies (WARCLARS at Nile University, Abuja.
Professor Olatunbosun was also a participant at the 2018 Conference of the African Consortium for Law and Religion Studies at the Sixth Annual International Conference on Law and Religion in Africa at the BAZE University, Abuja, Nigeria. He was the host of the 3rd Annual International Conference on Law and Religion in Africa for the University of Ibadan.
He was appointed Expert by International Criminal Court, Hague, The Netherlands form 2014 till 2019. He also served as the President, Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (N.A.L.T) from 2018 to 2019 and hosted the 52nd Annual Conference of the association in the University of Ibadan from 01-05 July, 2019. He had, at one time, been contacted to give an international expert opinion at the High Court of Justice, Family Division London, United Kingdom.
He has also as an aside written Newspaper articles in some Nigerian dailies like The Guardian, Vanguard, Punch, This Day, New Telegraph and The Nation. He appears as Consultant guest at the following Television stations, Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State, (BCOS), Osun State Broadcasting Corporation, (OSBC), Nigerian Television Authority, (NTA), African Independent Television, (AIT) and Channels Television.
He was appointed acting Vice-Chancellor, Koladaisi University, Ibadan on Monday 17th August 2020 till Sunday, July 31, 2021. He became the substantive Vice-Chancellor on Monday 1st August 2021, a position he has since assumed and would hold for five years in the first instance. He brings to the position a wealth of relevant administrative, leadership, teaching and research experiences gained over many years.
It is interesting to note that Prof Olatunbosun hails solely from the Akinyele Local government Area of Ibadan (both maternal and paternal sides). He loves to read, travel and invest in entrepreneurship. He is married to Dr. (Mrs) Yemisi. O. Olatunbosun and blessed with children.
