Vice-Chancellor’s Addresses

LET US TALK, WORK AND PLAY TOGETHER

Being address presented by Prof Kolade Luke Ayorinde, Vice Chancellor to Non- teaching Staff of KolaDaisi University, Ibadan on Friday, 19th January, 2017

Courtesies

A university is made up of indispensable interdependent tr-agents, namely students, teaching staff and non-teaching staff. All three must function in harmony towards the University’s set goals and objectives. Although, the academic staff are at the core of the University’s tripod objectives of teaching, research and community engagement, the non- teaching staff as the lubricants needed for the efficient functioning and performance of the academic staff. Thus a good crop of officers is required for the lecturers to perform maximally in their statutory functions. Thus you are a great part of the university system. As you attend to the basic duties that are nevertheless important in carrying out the University’s corporate objectives, you become indispensable and irreplaceable. So please see yourself as a major stakeholder in this enterprise as you join hands with me so that together we strive to build a University that will meet the needs and yearnings of Nigerians and bring fulfilment to the Founder and proprietor of this University.

In order to achieve this, you are expected to:

  1. Exhibit good work ethics, accountability and productivity.
  2. Be punctual and regular at work
  3. Be at your duty post during working hours
  4. Be exemplary, disciplined, committed and dedicated to duty
  5. Be good role models to our students
  6. Help popularize and populate KolaDaisi University
  7. Join in efforts to ensure peace, harmony, security and discipline on our campus
  8. Join in the crusade for enhanced revenue generation and plugging of wastages and leakages
  9. Be prudent and judicious in the use of University materials and properties
  10. Cooperate fully with Administration and be part of the day to day running of the university.

On our part,

  1. We will pursue proper orientation and reorientation of the human resources in all ramifications to enable you deliver on results
  2. Newly recruited staff will be made to undergo proper training and induction as to what working in a University entails
  3. We will define clear and achievable goals, objectives and expected outcomes based on your office or position
  4. We will embark on periodic training and retraining to enhance capacity building, skill acquisition and required competencies.
  5. We will provide needed facilities and resources to perform the assigned and designated tasks and duties.

Let us shun eye service or hypocrisy, perform our duties with good will, diligence, honesty, dutifulness and a good mindset. I therefore challenge you to let us talk together, work together and play together so together we can place KolaDaisi University in the enviable academic position she is expected to be.

Thank you for your attention.
Prof. K. L. Ayorinde

SOARING HIGH WITH GOD

Text of the inaugural speech delivered by Prof K. L. Ayorinde on Monday 8th January, 2018 at the Handing over ceremony as Vice-Chancellor, KolaDaisi University, Ibadan.

Courtesies

It is with great humility and gratitude to the Lord God Almighty that I address this assembly. I count it a very special honor and great privilege to be given the opportunity to serve this University as Vice Chancellor for the next five y3ears, God willing. Although I have been involved in one form of university governance or the other since joining the university system as a Lecturer II in May 1987, this new assignment is by far the most challenging and the capping of them all. I see my appointment as Divine and an assignment which God has designed for me to perform. I on my own have but little strength or ability but I know that my God who has sent me here will provide all that is required for the tasks ahead. I therefore call on you all to join hands with me as we work together to solidly establish this university and make it a university of choice and one to reckon with globally. Service to humanity is service to God. I therefore plead with you all to give your best to the service of this university so we can together establish a University we will all be proud of. We need to position ourselves for success and narrow the chances of failure by dedicating ourselves to the fear of God and selfless service. We need to set targets and work towards their attainment while not forgetting the vision and mission of this university. As we plough on in this endeavor I urge you all to make up your mind with a view to making your best contributions to the realization of the noble mandate of our university. We are all leaders in our little corners. I also plea with you to sustain and maintain our little spaces you find yourself in and watch as God blesses us in return. Let us constantly evaluate yesterday, identify the flaws or mistakes we have made and make total turnaround where necessary so we can ascend to higher heights. Let us all be more alive to our individual and corporate responsibilities, strengthen our relationship with God and watch as we experience the blessings of God in this new dawn.

Like every institution that wants not only to survive but stay relevant and competitive in future, we might need to introduce changes and new ideas. I therefore not only desire your loyalty and support but expect all of us to remain flexible and not be possessive about the way things are done around here. It does not have to be this is the way we have been doing things here and so do not want any change. We must welcome new ideas and strive to pursue them. Although changes can be stressful but it might be unavoidable and therefore important that we try them out and adapt as we strive to move KDU to loftier and greater heights. We need to release and replace all our negative energy and work positively towards the upliftment, advancement and transformation of the university. While it is necessary for us to try and remain simple, there is need for us to be focused, dogged, expectant, innovative and look prayerfully forward to a better tomorrow for our dear university.

Let us learn new things and ways, try them out and seek the benefits derivable there from. We need to change when things change and should not be afraid or feel too comfortable to change. We should be open-minded enough to learn something new, act differently and adapt in time so as to help us succeed and soar to greater heights as much is expected from this university. Let us borrow from the qualities of the eagle and together transform it to a world class university. Such unique qualities include speed, agility, strength, power, majesty, boldness, dependability, courage, tenderness, faithfulness, pride, ferocity and great daring. Like A. J. Cronin remarked ‘Life is no straight and easy corridor along which we travel free and unhampered, but a maze of passages, through which we must seek our way, lost and confused, now and again checked in a blind alley. But always, if we have faith, a door will open for us, not perhaps one that we ourselves would ever have thought of, but one that will ultimately prove good for us.’

Let us commit ourselves to great and wonderful things and watch as greater and bigger things begin to happen. Let us soar higher with God and you will be amazed at how much better our views will be, how much easier the road to the top will be and how faster we will reach the heights. We should learn to work smarter and not necessarily harder and thereby increase our efficiency and achieve our potentials as we wait on God. When we do, He will give us new insights and renew our strength for the tasks ahead. The more we soar with Him, the more we can observe and be observed. We should therefore not lose focus but remain determined and trusting. Let us strive for the very best and be committed to excellence no matter the challenges. Excellence demands high quality in all spheres of our daily living and activities. We must therefore live and work for God. We must work for that which is excellent. We must also do a lot better in order to move it to world class standard. Let each of us be determined to be the best we can be. Let us imagine it so we can achieve it with our renewed vision. Let us dream dreams about the future of this university. Let us therefore assess where we are starting from, where we are going, how we are going to get there and what we will do after we get there.

Let us key in to the vision and mission of this university so we can be where we not only think we should be but where we are expected to be. I therefore invite you to please join me as we work together to achieve the set goals and objectives. In doing so we must watch out for distractions, obstacles, criticisms, circumstances, people, etc, that can hold us back. Like P J Meyer said “whatever you vividly imagine, sincerely believe, and enthusiastically act upon…. Must inevitably come to pass!”

I therefore plead that we should not because of the fear of failure fail to take the steps of faith God expects us to take. We cannot afford to fail as our God never fails. Please be partners with me as together we transform the university into a world class institution.SO LET US SOAR TOGETHER

Thank you and God bless

A ROLLING STONE

BEING AN ADDRESS AT THE SPECIAL SENATE MEETING TO CONSIDER GOOD STANDING RESULT AND MARK END OF 2017/18 SESSION BY PROFESSOR K L AYORINDE, VICE CHANCELLOR, KOLADAISI UNIVERSITY, IBADAN TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2018

I most heartily welcome distinguished members of Senate to this first meeting of Senate called to consider the Good Standing Result of our Pioneering students after the successful ending of the 2017/2018 session. I must sincerely express appreciation for your support, sacrifice, dedication, cooperation, understanding and selfless service as we formally draw a curtain on the activities of our first session as a University. You will recollect that the first set of students of this University came into residence in November 2017 and we held our maiden Matriculation programme on the 14th day of March 2018 to formally herald our coming on stage as part of the Nigerian University System.

The last ten months have been quite challenging I must confess but thanks be to God for seeing us through. No doubt we have failed in several ways and come short of meeting expectations in some, but I am sure you will agree with me that we certainly have good reasons to celebrate. It has not been easy but we have ploughed through and perhaps come out smiling too. All the same we have to look back and learn from our failures, mistakes and inactions. We should n’t be afraid to move or try new ideas or else we will gather dust and moss. We should perhaps learn to do some things differently or adopt new strategies in the conduct of our activities. We should keep rolling..

In order to be successful, we have to keep moving and trying out new steps and approaches no matter how difficult or inconveniencing because successful we must be. However, if we are to succeed, which we will by God’s grace, then we have to sharpen our instinct of identifying good possibilities that can lead to success. We have to keep searching for new ways of succeeding. To keep moving may not be a popular idea as most people want to do as little moving as possible or avoid inconveniencies or try out new methods and yet want or hope to get good or better results. If we are to be a World Class University, which is the fulcrum of our mandate, then we have to do much more. We have to work harder and try to build a University that we Staffers, the Founder, Proprietor, Board of Trustees, Council and indeed all stakeholders will be proud of. Nothing works like work and I believe we can always make things a bit better here..

I have no doubt that the good times are ahead and perhaps just around the corner. I therefore seek for more diligence, dedication, understanding and cooperation. We will have to set some standards and work towards exceeding them. Meeting standards is normal but exceeding them is the mark of excellence. The world is waiting for us to excel. And excel we will in Jesus’s name. Let us go beyond the call of duty and strive for excellence. I am proud of you all for we have started well and laying a good foundation for the eventual emergence of KDU as a University of choice and hope. We have some success stories to tell already in this our first year but there are still many battles to fight and more victories to celebrate. Let’s keep persevering. I plea with you that we should not rest on our oars. Please join hands with me as nurture this young institution to a glorious University. God bless you all. Amen’

TOGETHER WE CAN DO IT

Text of the Address Delivered by the Vice – Chancellor of KolaDaisi University, Ibadan, Professor Kolade Luke Ayorinde, at the Inaugural Meeting of the Congregation of KolaDaisi University Ibadan on Wednesday, 31st January 2018.

Distinguished colleagues and fellow staffers of KolaDaisi University, it is with utmost pleasure and gratitude to the Lord God Almighty that I welcome you to the maiden Congregation meeting of this promising citadel of learning. Congregation, as enshrined in the University Law, is a statutory body of the University that shall provide an opportunity for its members to meet and express their views on matters affecting the interest and welfare of the University and its members. It therefore provides a veritable channel through which issues affecting the University are seriously addressed and critical matters that can move the University forward discussed. There is also provision for Congregation to be represented on Council by two elected members (one academic and one administrative).

Membership include the Vice Chancellor as Chairman, Deputy Vice Chancellor (s), full time members of the academic staff, Registrar as Secretary, Bursar, University Librarian and every member of the administrative staff who holds a degree of any University as recognized by Senate.

Quorum of meeting is one third or whole number nearest to one third of the total number of members of the Congregation. Frequency of meeting is twice a year.

It is my greatest privilege to declare open this first Congregation meeting of our University and to chair it. I sincerely hope that we shall make the best of this window of opportunity being provided by the University Law so we can enrich our University through positive contributions, constructive criticisms and suggestions that will strengthen the solid foundation we are trying to lay. I look forward to very robust deliberations and contributions as we meet to deliberate very sincerely and warmly on the floor of our University Congregation.

I want to begin by acknowledging the very warm reception I received when I assumed office about three weeks ago, precisely on the 8th of January 2018, and the words of encouragement, support and cooperation I have received since. I am not taking these for granted and I therefore salute you all. I am sure I can count on your continued support, cooperation, commitment and sacrifice as together we build a solid foundation and ensure realization of the dreams of the Founder of KolaDaisi University. I plea that we work together with a sense of honesty, dedication, purposefulness and unity. We might have to go at a slightly faster tempo than the last one year because the distance to cover is greater than we have hitherto anticipated and we have to arrive there, if possible, before others. The course of this journey and the desired destination have been clearly set by the Founder, Proprietors, Board of Trustees and Governing Board. We therefore need to carefully study the designed map, determinedly resolve and embark on this voyage, for which I am lucky to be the captain, together and safely. So let us paddle together so we can sail safely to the desired harbor.

As a new University we must dream dreams for therein lies the proof of our vision. However as we dream dreams we must carefully take steps together to actualize our dreams. We must set goals for ourselves and put in place the plans required to attain these anticipated achievements and accomplishments. We must also believe in ourselves that together we can. The whole world has been waiting for the arrival of KDU so let us push ahead with faith, zeal and determination no matter the challenges. There is so much to accomplish and achieve. There are many battles to fight and there is much to conquer if we must truly become the world class University we are expected to be at the least possible time. I am very sure that you all will agree with me that we have work to do if we are to be celebrated. As we lay a solid foundation for this University, I can assure you that the best will come our way and the sky will not be our limit but perhaps the beginning of new opportunities. Let us venture out. Let us live in love, peace and understanding as a team. We shall excel for the end of the beginning is certainly the beginning of the beginning. Let us make this the beginning of the beginning and the dream before the awakening. Let us invest our time and resources well, venture out together and attain the lofty height we are expected to be at.

Distinguished members of KDU Congregation, permit me to use this forum to comment on our attitude to work. I am aware that many of us live perhaps far away from the University campus but let me quickly remind you that there are no rights without responsibilities. A situation in which most staffers resume work very late is ethically disturbing and unacceptable. We must make punctuality the soul of our business here and remember that what is worth doing at all is worth doing well, AND ON TIME I must add. An unassailable operational philosophy is that “effective leadership is putting first things first while effective management is maintaining discipline.” This is expedient because without a sense of discipline, there is no dedication and without dedication, nothing really works. As stated by Roosevelt “We must move as trained and loyal army willing to sacrifice for the common good of a common discipline because without such discipline, no progress can be made, no leadership can be effective.” We must therefore maintain law and order and do things properly and in an orderly manner. I appeal that we all turn a new leaf, pick the petal and drop the metal in this matter. So let us play our expected roles well for we owe ourselves a duty of satisfying that inner urge that we must do what is right all the time. Of course we all owe this University a duty; we owe the Founder and Proprietors a duty; we owe the students a duty just as we owe the community and country a duty. Let us be socially responsible.

The vision of our University is to become a world class university in all ramifications. This is a vision we should pursue very vigorously so as to achieve excellence in our tripod mandates of teaching, research and community engagement. Let us aspire for excellence by being student-centered, student-oriented and character moulding. We should discourage all forms of assaults and exploitation, especially of our students by exhibiting exemplary leadership. Thus, by the grace of God since I have been saddled with the responsibility of being your captain or coordinator for the next five years, I promise to lead an Administration that will address the following:

  1. Effective and Efficient University Administration
  2. Human Resources Development
  3. Innovative Funding and Spending Mechanisms
  4. Campus Development and Infrastructures
  5. ICT Renewal
  6. Quality Teaching and Relevant Programs
  7. Quality Research
  8. Positive Staff and Student Associations
  9. Security, Peace and Discipline on Campus
  10. Staff and Student Welfare Issues
  11. Student Empowerment
  12. Leadership at the Grassroots
  13. Linkages and Partnerships
  14. Internationalization and Visible Ranking

Let us realize that our University must join the fast track in a fast moving world if we are to be what we are expected to be. We have to be on course and not shift our eyes from the goal and target. Let each of us contribute our small quotas in our diverse ways for the great development of our University. Let us be united for United We Stand. Let us voluntarily and positively renew our integrity, dutifulness, commitment, absolute discipline, hard-work, self -sacrifice and dedication. Let us develop great sense of responsibility and dutifulness that can promote the glory of KDU. Let us develop enduring spirit of selfless service so we can resolutely travel on the course of making KolaDaisi University great. I plea with you to renew your attitudes, ethos and excellence to all we do. In conclusion, Let me end this address with this admonition of Kennedy “Let’s not labor on those problems which divide us, Let us explore what problems unite us.” Let me state clearly that we will place premium on rewarding deserving staff and will not hesitate to frown at and reprimand deserving staff. God willing, I promise to lead an administration that is open, honest, transparent and receptive. I assure you that we are open to innovative and constructive criticisms and suggestions as long as they are geared towards moving our University forward. Let us pledge to this new but great course that we will have to run together. I urge you all to direct your energy, thoughts, experience, resources and control your emotions as together we build KDU on a solid foundation.
YES, TOGETHER WE CAN DO IT.

Thank you very much for your attention.

MEDIA BRIEFING

AN ADDRESS DELIVERED AT THE VICE CHANCELLOR’S INTERACTION WITH THE MEDIA BY PROFESSOR KOLADE LUKE AYORINDE, VICE CHANCELLOR, KOLADAISI UNIVERSITY, IBADAN, ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2019

Good morning gentlemen of the press. On behalf of the Founder, Proprietor, Members of the Board of Trustees, Governing Council, Senate, Congregation, Staff, students and stakeholders of Koladaisi University, Ibadan, it gives me great joy to welcome you this morning to our campus. I am sure some of you are here for the first time and therefore plead that you take some time out to please go round our small but beautiful campus. Let me also seize this opportunity to provide some information about what and who we are, where we are and where we plan to be. Koladaisi University, KDU, owned by the Kola Daisi Foundation, was licensed in November 2016 as a Private University in Nigeria. The Promoter of the University is Chief Kola Daisi (CON), the Bashorun of Ibadan Land. KDU has Emeritus Professor O O Akinkugbe as the Chairman, Board of Trustees and Professor Adeniyi Osuntogun as the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council. Other very eminent and distinguished scholars and professionals also serve on both Boards. Approval was given to the University by the National Universities Commission, NUC, to have six faculties at maturity and which are to be established in three phases. These are the Faculty of Applied sciences and Faculty of Arts, Management and social Sciences in Phase I, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Environmental Science and Faculty of Law in Phase II and faculty of Medicine in Phase III. However discussions are on- going to reorganize these programmes in view of recent global trends and needs.

The University commenced academic activities in the faculty of Applied Sciences with four departments and nine programmes: Biological Sciences (Biology, Biochemistry and Microbiology), Chemical Sciences (Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry), Mathematical and Computing Sciences (Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics) and Physics (Physics with Electronics), Faculty of Arts, Management and Social Sciences with six Departments and nine programmes: English and Literary Studies, History and Diplomatic Studies, Economics, Political Science, Mass Communication and Business Administration (Accounting, Banking and Finance and Business Administration). Our mission is to nurture graduates with high employability attributes and competencies to help transform our country into global reckoning and position of pride in all human endeavours. This we have started to achieve by training students in some of these programmes. Our first matriculation ceremony was held on the 17th of March 2018, with 32 students in 11 programmes. By the special grace of God the second matriculation programme comes up on the 27th of February 2019 with 110 students in 12 programmes. Presently we have students from 19 states of the federation and we hope to have a better national and international spread very soon. Our school has full boarding facilities with comfortable accommodation for all students, this we intend to keep. We also have a crop of well trained and dedicated staff who are serving as loco parentis to the students.

As part of our effort to address the problem of access and affordability to higher education,

  1. The Founder graciously approved the reduction of the fees payable by all categories of students in the current session by at least N50, 000.
  2. The University instituted the Scholars Scheme for outstanding students in each programme and level. Three students in the Department of Economics, English and Literary Studies and Microbiology with a CGPA above 4.50 benefitted from this based on the 100 Level result. This we hope will encourage academic excellence.
  3. The University also sought and obtained scholarship for three brilliant but indigent students, in the current academic
  4. Our staff also sponsored to conferences, workshops, seminars so as to encourage scholarship
  5. The University established the School of Preliminary and Advanced Studies last year. This programme is designed to
    1. Assist secondary school leavers who have sat for the O’ Level but have one or two deficiencies in key subjects which have to be remedied before they can enter the University and to coach them up for better performance these subjects and for the UTME for admission into the 100 Level, and
    2. Provide a veritable platform for secondary school leavers who have obtained credit passes in the various subjects required to gain admission to the course of their choice in any Nigerian University or overseas to sit for the Advanced Level Examination through the Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board, JUPEB for entrance into the 200 Level
  6. The University is also liaising with the National Universities Commission to seek approval to mount new programmes such as Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, Computer Science and Economics, Artificial Intelligence, Physics with Energy, Marketing, Human Resources Management, Criminology and Security Studies, Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, Library and Information Science among others.
  7. We also hope that very soon the Faculty of Natural and Allied Sciences with nine programmes (Biomedical Sciences, Health and Information Management, Medical Imaging, Nursing Sciences, Nutrition and Dietetics, Optometry and Vision Science, Medical Rehabilitation (Physiotherapy) and Sport Sciences) will come on board.

I want to begin by acknowledging the very warm reception I received when I assumed office about three weeks ago, precisely on the 8th of January 2018, and the words of encouragement, support and cooperation I have received since.
