KDU Lecturer Wins Prestigious Oxford Fellowship

Dr. J. O Akanni Shines as he becomes Afox visiting fellow

Dr. John Olajide Akanni, a lecturer in the Department of Mathematical and Computing Sciences at KolaDaisi University, has been awarded a prestigious fellowship at the University of Oxford through the Africa Oxford Visiting Fellowship Programme. Dr. Akanni is a leading biomathematician and mathematical modeler. He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Mathematics, Universitas Airlangga in Indonesia. As part of the AfOx Mathematics Institute Visiting Fellowship, he will collaborate with distinguished academics such as Prof. Philip Maini at the Wolfson Centre for Mathematical Biology and Prof. Deirdre Hollingsworth at the Nuffield Department of Medicine's Big Data Institute. During his fellowship at Oxford, Dr. Akanni will focus on creating a deterministic model for Onchocerciasis (commonly known as river blindness) using Bayesian methods. His work aims to assess the effectiveness of various disease control strategies, including public health education, fumigation, and mass drug administration, with a focus on cost efficiency. Additionally, he will investigate the potential impact of climate change on the disease's transmission. According to the Registrar of the University, Mr. Haruna Olawale Adetu, the fellowship will also grants Dr. Akanni membership in the prestigious Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and St. Edmund Hall at Oxford. His induction ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at the University of Oxford. The Vice Chancellor of KolaDaisi University, Professor Adeniyi Olatunbosun, SAN, expressed pride in Dr. Akanni's achievement, stating, "This recognition of Dr. Akanni's work reflects his expertise and dedication.
